I helped shape the competition categories and prize distribution so the hackathon stayed fair for builders while steering submissions toward the areas Meta wanted to accelerate across Horizon OS.

My role

  • Defined the hackathon categories in which developers competed.
  • Helped distribute prizes in a way that felt balanced and defensible across different build paths.
  • Made sure the category structure pushed teams toward Meta's strategic priorities instead of rewarding only one narrow type of project.

How the structure worked

  • Broad experience tracks kept the competition understandable for participants entering from different XR backgrounds.
  • Special awards created room for platform bets like Passthrough Camera Access with AI, Spatial SDK, Immersive Web SDK, Android, and React Native.
  • That mix let the competition reward both polished end-user experiences and technically important platform experiments.

Why it mattered

  • The public challenge positioned the program around a $1.5M prize pool and a five-week build window.
  • A fair prize map matters because the rules implicitly tell developers what the platform values.
  • The final category design aligned incentives with Meta's ecosystem goals while staying legible to entrants and judges.

Balancing fairness with product strategy.

Fair distribution

The award structure needed to avoid over-concentrating prizes around one toolchain or one content style. Builders coming from Unity, Android, web, and newer Meta stacks needed a real path to compete.

Meta alignment

The categories also had to promote the capabilities Meta wanted the ecosystem to explore most, including mixed reality, passthrough, hand interactions, and newer development surfaces.

Program signal

Competition design is a product signal. The categories and prizes tell developers where to invest time, what kinds of innovation are welcomed, and what “good” looks like for the platform.
